more frequency out of range on install questions
Hi, first post, I searched for problems like mine, but they did not help.
I boot the cd 6.10 or 7.04 beta.
I get to the first screen ok. With start or install Ubuntu, the next thing I see is my monitor says, loading linux...
then I get a message from my monitor,
out of range, H:35kh vertical, V:87khz and it shuts off. It's a flat panel 1280x1024 screen.
I've tried, using esc to get to the boot: prompt.
I've then entered, live vga=ask noapic nolapic
I then get press <RETURN> to see video modes, it says,
Video adapter: VESA VGA
... bunch of mode COLSxRows like,
0 0F00 80x25
...
then enter mode number or 'scan', I've tried a few mode numbers and tried scan, nothing works.
I've got an ecs k7vta3 mobo, with an amd athlon 1800 processor and an (older) diamond stealth video card (2 megs I think)
any suggestions?

more info
Well, it's not the video card. I plugged in 2 different video cards. The first was a pci card, and it had the same result.
The second was an agp card, and it got a bit further. It got to the next screen and froze there.
I also built a working system on my other computer, then tried to move the hard drive over and it booted and got stuck at the same place. So, i booted with the recovery kernel, and for what it's worth, it left a lot of debugging stuff on the screen:
call trace:
send_IPI_mask_bitmaxk...
filemap_nopage
timer_interrupt
handle_irq_event
handle_level_irp
do_irq
__user_walk_fd
common_interrupt
find_vma
do_page_fault
do_page_fault
error_code
Then a line with Code: and a bunch of numbers all 2 digit hex values.
So, it appears it does not like my mobo. I have a win2k system that works just fine on this hardware.
Here's a cpu-z output of this machine:
CPU-Z 1.39 report file

What happens when you type "vgalo" (without quotes) at the first install screen before proceeding? Stands for VGA -- Lo resolution

found one that works, nosmp noapic nolapic
Well, after much trial and error and googling linux boot options, I stumbled upon this combination:
boot: live nosmp noapic nolapic
The nosmp seems to be the key item that finally did the trick. Wonder why it thought I had a multi-processor - if I understand nosmp correctly.
I booted my hard disk from my other system and added these into grub on the kernel line.
So, if this keeps up, I'm a happy camper!
