1. Open a terminal and try:
Code:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
to manually configure your monitor. You can select things with the tab and enter keys. You will need to go through numerous screen, but you will eventually get to the screen that allows you to select video modes you would like to use for your monitor. On the next screen, select "medium" level for resolution/refresh rate details and you will be able to choose something like "1280x1024@60Hz".

2. I've never used a firewire disk. Is there any reason why you don't want to use it as a USB disk? I have used numerous USB flash drives on Ubuntu and they work great.

3. It may be related to #2. Perhaps there is something wrong with modules/drivers needed for firewire?

Hi,
many thanks for your answer to an other guy.

I had the same problem and donīt now where I can configure X11, because I use SuSe bevor.
( SuSe is an other thing! )
