Molecule screen saver causing system crash in 7:10
Hello one and all, I've just installed Ubuntu 7:10 on my Dell Dimension 4300S. This is my first Linux install and my first experience with Linux in general.
Upon install, I took a look at the screen savers but when I got to Molecule, it freezes my system and forces me to hard crash. This is complicated by the fact that the screen saver selection is stuck on molecule, so I can't go to the list to change it, as it immediately crashes my system when I go through System>Preferences>ScreenSaver. Does anyone know if there is a command and I can put into the terminal to delete this screen saver? Sorry, this is my first time using Linux, I'm a recovering XP user so I apologize if I'm oblivious to a simple solution! ----- -Dave |
Horray! After much searching of the internet, I came across several other people who've had the same problem. In fact, it turns out it's a known bug... whatever that means...
I discovered how to set my root password (hadn't done that yet!) After I did that, I deleted the molecule file from the system, and bam! problem solved. How about that, eh? not bad for a first time terminal user, eh? -Dave |
FWIW, the GLMatrix screensaver completely freezes my laptop (Dell E1405) after a couple minutes of running. I don't know if it does so in the preview window of the configuration section, but it does when running for real. This is on Ubuntu 7.10. I found that it only happens when I have desktop effects enabled. With desktops effects disabled my GLMatrix doesn't have any problems. Anyhow, not sure if this is directly related to your issue, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Well, I tried the Molecule screensaver and it completely froze my laptop - with desktop effects disabled. Interesting. You said it's a known bug, that's good news I guess. I hope the author is on it. If I get some time I might Google it and try to find-out what the deal is. Peace.

Well, good luck with that, I think I spotted the answer over at ubuntuforums.org, but I don't have the time right now to do a search.
