modem setup help, yes, dial-up

Well, I've moved off to the Marshall Islands. My only internet option is over dial-up. I connect just fine with this W2K encrusted Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop.

I downloaded and burned the latest Ubuntu 5.10 Live CD and it boots up just fine. However, I've forgotten how to deal with the internal modem. The modem was not automatically detected with pppconfig, but lspci -v shows it's an Intel 82801C/CAM AC' 97 Conexant MD56ORD V.92 modem. It says Flags: Medium devsel, IRQ 5 and I/O ports d400 [size=256] and dc00 [size=128].

That's all I know about it so far. In pppconfig I tried /dev/ttyS0 - 4 with no luck. There's no /dev/modem, and of course, wvdial cries about that.

So, I don't know where it lives in the linux la la land inside this laptop.

Anybody want to guide me to get that setup? Man... it's tough surfin' and searchin' at 54.6K. or 52.3K, and 48.2K..... I miss my 3 Mbps DSL... but I don't miss not having a paycheck.

I may just wait until my shipment of personal stuff makes it on the barge out here to the island. My trusty dusty Zoom External modem is in that, as well as my 2 other desktop machines.

Thanks...

I'm really not sure... I'd just try all the different /dev/ttys1 with a different number at the end.. Who knows, it may find it.

I remember back when I became a DSL snob... I stopped responding to dial-up modem threads too.

Once my slackware box reaches me out here, I'll be good to go again.
