Missing "Applications Places Sytem" toolbar items

I've been using the latest Ubuntu release 8.04lts on the computer I just built. It has been running great. I did have some problems with the settings for my EN8400GS video card but it seemed to work OK the last couple of days. Anyway, I turn on the computer this morning and it boots to the Ubuntu desktop with my Firefox, Thunderbird, and Echolink icon but the top bar which usually shows Applications Places System is not there. The printer icon, wired network icon, volume icon, update icon, and time and date icons are all gone and not showing also. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04lts on this machine also and it is doing just fine. Thanks again. Gary

I've had things on my toolbar rearranged once before, but never has anything disappeared. Have you tried rebooting your computer? Do you see the top bar at all (but with nothing on it) or is it completely gone?
