Migrating from Mandriva 2006 to Ubuntu
Hi there,

Question for you all, how do I migrate my personal settings from one distro to another? Mainly my hidden .files in my home folder. I would like to save my old emails, addresses, and possibly some old book marks.

I have two separate hard drives one with Mandriva the other with Ubuntu 5.10 The files that I am talking about are for Thunderbird and Firefox

I did try to copy them from my home folder in Mandriva into my home folder in Ubuntu, but all that I succeeded in doing was to corrupt them

Harsh words man. :)
You have to realize, some weeks (like during the holidays!) are slow. In addition to that unfortunatly, there are always a few posts that fall through the cracks and never get answered.

Did you try this?

cp -a /home/cooldude/* /mnt/destination/
cp -a /home/cooldude/.* /mnt/destination/

Hi Sepero,

Sorry for my impatience I can be a little hot headed. Anyway thanks for your input I will give your suggestion a shot.

Here is what I have done so far. My current distro is Mandriva 2006. I went into my home directory in mandriva copied my .mozilla folder and .thunderbird over to Ubuntu home .mozilla and thunderbird. This was unsuccessful. The error msg that I got was that the mozilla & thunderbird profiles are corrupted. I then deleted the .folders in Ubuntu and restarted the apps. Next I went one level down under Mandriva thunderbird into .thunderbird/default and copied over to Ubuntu .thunderbird/default folder. This also through up the same error msg.

I then repeated the same process but this time I went into the .default folder and copied over the abook.mab after deleting the one in Ubuntu but this also failed, same error. I also copied over the local folders from under .thunderbird/mail/localfolders, fired up thunderbird. The local folders were there but were empty.

Any ideas?

First of all, did you actually "mv"(move) these files instead of copying them? Have you possibly damaged/deleted them without backups?

Second, are the versions on Mandriva newer than the versions on Ubuntu? That could cause Ubuntu programs to not recognize the files.

Other than that, I'm not exactly sure what to tell you. Personally, I would try to salvage a bits that I could. My bookmarks.html file is probably the most important FF file I have, and I think that would probably copy over without much difficulty.

Thanks Sepero,

What I did was to copy the files from the Mandriva thunderbird to another hard drive then to Ubuntu thunderbird. This is because the Ubuntu hard drive is not in my pc as yet, I just swap them as required.

Both versions of thunderbird are 1.07

CD, I agree about the bookmarks. Start your Mandriva (which I also abandoned for Ubuntu!) Firefox, go to bookmarks, manage bookmarks. There you can export them to a html file. Should be able to export cookies, history too(from a different menu).

Then just import them in Ubuntu. I dont use thunderbird but would imagine it would have an export function as well.

Thanks Cetol,

I will give that a try later.
