Welcome to LQ.org

mcedit is part of the Midnight Commander program. I believe that if you open a terminal and type:

Code:
sudo apt-get install mc
would download and install mcedit for you.

Hmmm, strange. I think you may need to add extra repositories to your Ubuntu. Please check this tutorial:

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper

it has answers to many questions regarding Ubuntu, including how to add extra APT repositories. Once you've added extra repositories, then do:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mc

That should work, hopefully
