Upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 and the Unity Task Bars were gone!!! All that the screen showed was the basic user desktop, so no ability to click on system icons to try to figure things out. Didn't even have the cursor available. Looked-up
KeyBoard shortcuts to see if I could gain access to the system. That didn't work either.
After a bit of frantic searching, I found this post. "
Lost unity taskbars and window frames after upgrading from 12.04 LTS on a Dell Precision m4600 nVidia".

Of course,
I would recommend reading the entire post by Nicky Bailuc and Mitch before doing anything, should you have the same issue. I would also suggest following the links appearing in the various posts. Others have evidently also "
lost" the Unity GUI when upgrading. (
12.10 Unity GUI Not Displaying [closed]) This solution appears to have worked for me. Another upgrade "
learning" experience. I hope that you do not experience this issue.
