When reinstalling ubuntu 10.04, I get an error message that reads "the ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of SCSI3 (0,0,0) (sda) failled.

Have you booted just as a live session.

sudo apt-get install gparted
then

Code:
sudo gparted
And Delete previous Ubuntu install partition before proceeding with install. You can also manually create a ext4 partition with gparted before proceeding with install also.
