lost sound, onboard no longer found under pulsemixer


rebooted
alsamixer has been checked F6 selected onboard sound device, toggled mutes and sliders. no fix

Audio: Card-1 NVIDIA GK208 HDMI/DP Audio Controller driver: snd_hda_intel
Card-2 Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) driver: snd_hda_intel
Card-3 Logitech QuickCam Messanger driver: USB Audio
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.15.0-45-generic

checked my cables and tried headphones. nothing

pulsemixer config no longer shows onboard audio device


any ideas?

The first thing that comes to my mind is that maybe the sound card has gone west.

The first test I would try would be to boot to a Live CD of something not *buntu and seeing whether the sound works with it.

good idea,
computer sound works well under Puppy via USB

Well, that definitely indicates it's software and not hardware.

When you say "pulsemixer" do you mean pavucontrol? If not, I'd recommend installing pavucontrol.

Otherwise, I haven't had to deal with anything like this; one hopes someone who has well join us here.

Did you check the sound settings with pacmd list-sinks ?

yes I did,
it only reports the HDMI (via gfx card) and USB webcam
not the onboard AC97

I'm going to try
#sudo update-initramfs -u
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.15.0-45-generic

in case the kernel is mismatched or not detecting the onboard sound
