I installed ubuntu a few days ago. I had sound after the installation process. The other day, there was a problem during the shut down process, and I had to force the system to shut off (e.g. removed laptop battery). I no longer have sound. I assume it was lost during whatever error occurred during the shut down process.
I would normally just find a new audio driver, but I can't find the appropriate one for a linux based operating system.
I didn't see an error message in the logs, but the list is so long that it's reasonable to believe that if there were an error, I could've overlooked it.
There is no error message displayed when I try to use the sound or adjust the audio settings.
I am not using ALSA. I'm going to see if I can figure out how to install it.
Would a clean re-install of Ubuntu resolve this problem? I had sound after I wiped XP in lieu of Ubuntu without having to install or modify anything.

If you are using the latest version of Ubuntu (Intrepid 8.10) it uses pulse audio by default. Alsa is installed though. Go to system > prefernces > sound, and change everything to alsa. Then click the "test" button to see if you get sound. If not, try a reboot and check for sound.
I'm not sure what fixed the problem, actually. I went into the audio settings, then into preferences, and then made sure the IEC958 option was checked (so that it was activated). This was a fairly arbitrary move, but I remembered it being checked off before, and when I looked at it initially, it was not. I reset the computer afterward, and then noticed the audio icon was muted. So, I simply removed the mute, and sound gushed from the speakers.
I think the audio error was simply one of incorrect formatting.
