lost internet access - upgrade hell

Have been using Ubuntu 7.10 for some time quite happily.

Just yesterday I was gloating over how easy to use and stable it was.

Well I decided to upgrade wine from 0.9.5 to 1.0.

In synaptic I filtered for updates. Only acroread and wine showed. I did not care about acroread but decided to hit update all anyway.

After some download time I found that neither acroread or wine had updated.

So I marked wine for update by itself and ran into a dependency problem.

So I went to the command line and typed 'sudo apt-get install wine. It reported dependency problems and offered to resolve them. I said yes resolve them.

Now I cannot access the web from Firefox or Dillo or ping.

The dependency files were winbind and samba.

So is the rule never ever to update or upgrade in Ubuntu if you have a stable happy system?

Please recommend a stable linux version that can download the latest stable version from the developers without breaking my system. Please.

By the way wine is reporting itself as 1.0 now that my system is completely broken for web access. I'm typing this from Windows 2000 dual boot partition. I hate windows. Where are my other desktops? Where is my terminal? Where is my Openbox right click menu?

Thanks for any help.

Updates and Upgrades

Hello,

I honestly don't know why you had such a problem. I am no longer on Ubuntu 7.10 as I upgraded and did a fresh install on 8.04 (which I recommend doing as opposed to upgrade of 7.10).

As for your problem, both of those files sound like they have to do with windows networking. I don't see why they would break your internet connection. You should search the ubuntu forums to see if similar issues have come about.

If you are using wireless, try going wired and see if that fixes your connectivity issues.

Sorry, not much of a help here.

Best regards.
