Have you tried installing the joystick package then running jstest /dev/js0 and pressing the buttons? If you see the numbers change then it is working now Ubuntu uses udev so you may need to get some help making a rule for it but all I had to do when I picked up a generic usb joystick was use MAKEDEV to create the device nodes but the udev is supposed to do that for systems using it then modprobe joydev.

You should be able to just apt-get install joystick if it is available what does the command below show you.

Code:
apt-cache policy joystick
joystick:

  Candidate: 20051019-1
  Version table:
 *** 20051019-1 0

        600 http://ftp2.de.debian.org sid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
