Loading existing windows partition with vmware not working

ok, so I found this guide on the internet on how to load an existing windows partition inside Ubuntu with vmware.
http://www.advicesource.org/ubuntu/R...re_player.html
I have followed all the steps very carefully but when I start vmware on ubuntu it comes back with grub giving me error #21

The only difference between my machine and the person who wrote this article is that they are using ide hard drives while I am using SATA hard drives. also, I'm not sure if this could be causing the problem, but if I want to boot into Windows, I have to go into the bios and enable APIC in power management, if I want to boot any version of linux, I have to disable APIC.

tell me if you have any suggestions
