live usb defrag


is it safe to defragment the xubuntu live_usb_persistence stick with standard utils? (will it boot afterwards?) its fat32, created with unetbootin.

yes, that's as safe as it is with an ordinary Windows partition: It'll go faultless in more than 99% of all occasions, but there's always some remaining risk. However, that's inherent to the process of defragmenting, not the operation of the live Ubuntu system on that media.

I don't think I would. Can't say there is a need. The casper file was created at the install time and is as fragmented as it was when you made it.

The file that holds the persistent data is a file that should be only defragged or attempted to by mounting the flash from some other OS and not within the booted flash OS. You could do the entire drive at the same time but there is a small risk that it might need to have syslinux put back on.


Guess you could tar it off and back to put all the files in contiguous order. Same might even work for a simple copy back and forth.

I can't see any reason for it in any case.
