Live Cd dosen't load

I currently own one xp computer (due to my old linux pc giving up on life) so now I have to rely on live cd's. I picked up my trusty Ubuntu live cd and tried to load it. The cd manages to make it past the splash screen and the loading screen but as soon as the desktop/ x window system tries to load the screen just goes blank and the monitor goes into standby mode. I have a Intel celeron processor, 80gb hard drive, Geforce 4 MX-440 graphic card and 512mb of ram. Does anybody know what is happening?
p.s. Knoppix and other live cd's seem to work, maybe my graphics card has a problem with gnome?

I have had the same problem -> my monitor wasn't able to show the correct resolution.
try to start with low resolution, or only in textmode, to find out what's you'r exact problem.

When the screen goes blank can you switch the the command line, this can be done by pressing ctl-alt-f1. If so it's probably just your x-server messed up and we can try to get more information. If you can't even switch to that then there's bigger problems.

I don't really see how it can be the x-server but still its a good idea. Like I said in my first post i used to use this cd on my old pc and installed it perfectly. I'll definetly have to try that though thnx mcmillan

Also I forgot to mention that the os seems to load. If i leave the computer on while the screen is blank the opening music still plays. This is what led me to believe it might be the video card or the monitor which was at fault. Plus ubuntu seems to be the only live cd to not to work on my pc.
