Linux and NTFS

Hi everybody !

I have a big problem with my computer. I have HP m7650n Intel duo core. I tried to do a partition with partition magic and the process failed. So I did restart but... the computer turn around and cant boot up. May be the MBR is damaged. I don't want to do restoration of system because I don't want to lose my data. I tried many things and finally I install Ubuntu to backup my data. There too a problem. Linux can see the partition HP Recovery but not the principal partition. The principal partition must be NTFS. Can somebody can tell me what to do to backup my datas. Please ansewr me if you have any idea.

Get a live cd such as PartedMagic or System Rescue CD. These can read NTFS partitions. Is the recovery partition not NTFS?

You can try to use Photorec or foremost to recover data. You run it from a live CD and write the results to a different drive (otherwise you'll overwrite the data you're trying to recover). You'll get back a bunch of files, but all of them will have lost their filenames (instead they'll be named something like 10023923.jpg, 12032134901.doc, etc).

If you hadn't installed Ubuntu, Testdisk might have let you fix your partition table the way it was and just boot up.

I tried both of them, but nothing... Maybe I am not able to do it...
I write the image on CD et the computer start but stop at this line :
ASPI: PCI Bout Bridge [PCI0] (0000:00)
I thought it is like linux and is something graphic. So What to do. For me is important to recovery my datas only...
Thank's anuro

Try BartPE

If the data is in NTFS go to another computer with MS get a MS setup disk and to to the BartPE site it will let you compile a start up windows CD that runs with Bart PE (no hard drive required. This will get you into the data. It takes some time to learn, read. And some trial and error but you can network out the data to another drive. Good luck and we have done this before many times.
