LibreOffice 3.4 in Ubuntu 11.04

Hi,

I've tried to install the latest version of libreoffice in ubuntu 11.04 by adding the repositories (I followed this guide: http://mygeekopinions.blogspot.com/2...in-ubuntu.html) but upon updating my packages, 3.4 does not show up in it. When I go and download libreoffice from the homepage (a tar.gz file, no .deb is available), It states that it is not a valid tar.gz file when trying to decompress.

How can i still install it on Ubuntu please?

You have 2 choices, either download the tar.gz and compile it yourself, or use version 3.3.3 from the Ubuntu software center.

You can download .deb version 3.4.3 from LibreOffice site

the deb should be fine
i just garbed the rpm last night
Right now i dl'ed the 32bit deb "LibO_3.4.3_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz " -145 MB
and it opens right up in file roller in Gnome .I can not install the deb ( suse 11.3 ) so....

but a warning there is a VERY old python bug
it dates back to rh9 so you might need to use the 3.3 version in the repos of libpyuno.so

that is for this error "PyUnicodeUCS2_FromUnicode" you might see it or not .

I would try a fresh download with nothing else using your connection at the time. You may have had a bad file.

You did not say how you were trying to extract the compressed file either. If you were the archive manager try doing it through the terminal or the other way around.

I tried both, terminal and via the standard application in gnome (forgot the name and cannot find it right now). I also downloaded it twice, so I don't think there is a corrupted one. Maybe I'll try with a download manager

So, according to you I should stick with 3.3 to avoid potential problems?

openoffice 3.0 and oo2 and oo1 also had this issue

it is related to how your distro built python ( and the python installed)
you may or may not run into the error

extract the deb flies out of it
read the README (readmes/README_en-US)file
then run

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

as per the instructions.

I have 3.4.3 on Debian Sid and it runs just fine.

If you have a .deb you can also install it with gdebi if Ubuntu still installs it. That is just a case of right clicking on the .deb and selecting the gedebi option.

gdebi is just gui for the dpkg command all ready given. That works great and even Ubuntu can't leave dpkg out of the install so you know it is there.

Sorry, I was looking up for it in the apps menu, but could not find it. Yes indeed, double clicking on the file is the easiest way :-). It's called file roller.

But I downloaded the RPM file just to test, and this file I could open. So I guess the .deb file is corrupted. I cannot see another explanation for it (I downloaded it now three times).

Hi,

I installed Ark and with this program, I had no problems at all to decompress the installation files. So I guess there something wrong with file-roller or so...

Anyway, I have now libreoffice 3.4.3 but I still have one question left. I thought that this version of libreoffice would integrate into the new style of ubuntu in that way that there would be no separate menu panel, but that it would use the panel on the top of the screen such as other programs. Or am I wrong?

You installed the package from the open documents folks. Seeing how no other distro is silly enough to be screwing with the menus I doubt that they have.

Ubuntu will have to tweak that themselves, probably, to get that non-functionality.
