Laggy/poor DVD playback Edgy on G3 iBook

I've recently switched to Ubuntu on my iBook G3 (500 Mhz) and DVD playback is very laggy and stuttery.

Is there a workaround, or do I need Osx to watch DVDs? (They run without problems in osx)

This is basically the only thing I need the iBook for, so any help is much appreciated.
