Kubuntu + switch user = crash
I've search for about 40 minutes and am very busy, so please forgive me if I missed a thread on this topic, but I really need to get back to work.
Using Kubuntu Dapper LTS, 792 MB memory, Pentium 4, ATI video card with latest driver working nicely thank you very much, etc. etc. My wife tried to switch users on the laptop this morning, and was dumped to at TY screen that looked like what you see when you boot and don't have any Usplash enabled, except it halted part-way through, and stalled there. No KDM login manager, nothing. This necessitated restarting the system, which could have meant my losing 6 hours of work, but like a good computer user I backed everything up. I tried to replicate the problem, and it happened every time --Kicker >> Switch User >> Lock Current & Start New Session, kaboom. /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows a whole lot of: drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns -1023 drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card223 drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device) drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device) drmOpenDevice: Open failed xorg.conf file is below. I'd really like to get this solved; this only happens on our laptop, not on the desktop, and the desktop is busy doing other stuff right now so can't be bothered by us switching users all the time. If anyone has any insight on this, shine a light on me. ******xorg.conf****** # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file) # # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database. # # Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page. # (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.) # # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only* # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg # package. # # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated # again, run the following command: # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Default Layout" Screen "Default Screen" 0 0 InputDevice "Generic Keyboard" InputDevice "Configured Mouse" InputDevice "stylus" "SendCoreEvents" InputDevice "cursor" "SendCoreEvents" InputDevice "eraser" "SendCoreEvents" InputDevice "Synaptics Touchpad" EndSection Section "Files" # path to defoma fonts FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/misc" FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/cyrillic" FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/Type1" FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/100dpi" FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/75dpi" FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType" EndSection Section "Module" Load "bitmap" Load "ddc" Load "dri" Load "extmod" Load "freetype" Load "glx" Load "int10" Load "type1" Load "vbe" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Generic Keyboard" Driver "kbd" Option "CoreKeyboard" Option "XkbRules" "xorg" Option "XkbModel" "pc104" Option "XkbLayout" "us" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Configured Mouse" Driver "mouse" Option "CorePointer" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad" Driver "synaptics" Option "SendCoreEvents" "true" Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" Option "Protocol" "auto-dev" Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0" EndSection Section "InputDevice" # /dev/input/event # for USB Identifier "stylus" Driver "wacom" Option "Device" "/dev/wacom" # Change to Option "Type" "stylus" Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY EndSection Section "InputDevice" # /dev/input/event # for USB Identifier "eraser" Driver "wacom" Option "Device" "/dev/wacom" # Change to Option "Type" "eraser" Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY EndSection Section "InputDevice" # /dev/input/event # for USB Identifier "cursor" Driver "wacom" Option "Device" "/dev/wacom" # Change to Option "Type" "cursor" Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Generic Monitor" HorizSync 30.0 - 65.0 VertRefresh 50.0 - 75.0 Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. Remove or comment out the: Load "dri".
You are using fglrx which would conflict with dri which is a different type of driver. I'm not sure if thats exactly what's causing this particular problem but I would correct that for starters since its looking for something in /dev/dri |
Thanks for the prompt response and I apologize for the late return. But this hasn't helped as of yet. It still crashes on switching user, so I'm still looking for an answer to this.
