Kubuntu SU Info

Hey Guys/Gals,

I just installed Kubuntu after hearing much rave about it. I like it very much so far except for one thing..... the whole "sudo command" thing. I have figured out the in a console you can do "SUDO SU" then a password and then do commands as normal.

But my main thing is, that when I am in the control center, in the "internet & networking" and then "SAMBA" everything is greyed out, so I hit the administrator mode button and it prompts me for the root password, so I use the password I use in the console for the SU and it doesn't work, it goes back to the default control center start page.

Any ideas? Is there a way to set up a "true" root password and get away from this SUDO stuff?

Thanks!

to add yourself to the sudoers file ,
enter :
su
visudo
add to the file the line [username] ALL=(ALL) ALL where [username] denotes your user name

OR just edit /etc/sudoers and add [username] ALL=(ALL) ALL

Hi

I'm not that used to Ubuntu but my experience is that you should give the USER passwd when they ask for a password for doing su stuff. Reading Ubuntu forums seems to credit this to the idea that it's possible to forget the su password so instead they prompt for your regular one when something extra is about to happen...

I usually do all setup from a su terminal so I havn't tried the control center.

Kind Regards and Good Luck!

thanks for all the comments. I updated the system and that fixed the control panel issue. As far as the other stuff for the passwords, I havent tried yet.

I always use a regular user, I am just not used to doing the SUDO thing.

Thanks again!

Setting root password

You can use 'sudo -s' to get yourself a root prompt and then use the 'passwd' command to set the root password. I use the same password for my user and root account and it seems to work well for me.
