Kubuntu S.O.S: Cannot use any root authorization programs
I've got a Kubuntu S.O.S. on my hands, and i need it fixed quickly!
My S.O.S. started this morning when my updater was clogged with a virtualbox update, and it *would* run, but afterwards I tried to reset all my user's settings and then Kubuntu drove itself into a ditch by corrupting ALL USERS somehow, making so that i could not authorize any account anywhere. Now i'm stuck and i can't figure out why but i can't authorize myself in any way! I'm the op of this computer, but another person uses it so i'm screwed if he comes back and can't change anything! I'll have to go to.... *cry* the forever forbidden windows XP.... Help me... please....

Can you log in using your username? If not in the GUI, then try ctrl-alt-F1 for a command prompt and try it there. If you cannot log in as ANY user, you can recover by booting from the install CD, mounting the Linux partition and editing the /etc/passwd file----remove the first "x" from a user's entry, and that user can now log in with no password. (after reboot)

Not what i had in mind. I mean, i can't use any root auth program like gksu, kdesu, or sudo. If there are any more problems like it, please tell me. For some reason even full-permission users can't use root authorizing programs, or even be an administrator. Actually, this is a straight Buntu (Canonical Ltd.) OS SOS. Help, my friend is coming to use my computer in a couple of hours!

Just a thought
I am not sure if this will help much, but maybe you could just change it so root has a password of its own and use that until you can recover it somehow?

Then, you'll have access to su and kdesu and stuff?

Edit: I don't think sudo will work, though, 'cause this just changes root's password.

I don't think i can do that/it won't work. Like i said, i'm running Kubuntu, not Ubuntu. My friend is already here, chewed me out, and now i think i need to reinstall linux on my comp before he comes again to being stressed and crap. A few questions:
For one, is DreamLinux configurable to look more like Windows? Like, with Redmond style, with same layout as Windows but with KDE?
If so, that will be my next Linux choice.
If not, then what is a good OS that you can set configs for a pure linux fan, but can be configured to satisfy even the most stubborn of Windows users? My friend is a rare user of my computer, but i don't want him to come back to a screwed up computer again.

first, if your friend is giving you hard time, then politely suggest that he can set up his own machine.

As to the substance, you first said:

ubuntu drove itself into a ditch by corrupting ALL USERS somehow, making so that i could not authorize any account anywhere.
Now I'm a bit confused as to what the real issue is. Maybe you could give examples of what works and what does not.

If you want to go "distro-hopping", take a look at PCLinuxOS, Mepis, or OpenSUSE.

While Kubuntu and Ubuntu use different window managers, the kernel method for setting root password should work equally well on either. Hopefully you won't have to reinstall.

What i'm saying is, i cannot use the following programs:
sudo -s

On errors of these programs:
Su returned with an error.
GKsu/GKsudo just won't launch the prog specified.
sudo(in terminal)-
archoniam@lappy486:~$ sudo aptitude reinstall kubuntu-desktop
archoniam is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
(Note that i am in the 'sudo' group and all other groups.)
So, that leaves my loophole:
Su is the only way i can use any root-auth program.

For one, i'm about to begin failsafing by removing Kubuntu and Ubuntu and reinstalling Kubuntu.
And for two, this will only be temporary as i plan on getting Gentoo Linux.
