Kubuntu kernel bug?

I changed from Ubuntu to Kubuntu three days ago and since then the screen has locked up twice. On both occasions what I think is a log file appeared on the screen. Nothing I tried would unlock the screen.

Followed by 20ish more lines.

How did you make this change???
1. Did you do a clean install of Kubuntu??
2. Did you simply just run: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop???
3. Or did you do something else to change to Kubuntu??? We need the specifics here.

On both occasions of what??? Are you talking about when you try to boot into Kubuntu??? Or something else???

Please tell us:

1. Exactly how did you switch from Ubuntu to Kubuntu?
2. What exactly happens when you boot? Do you get a choice to boot to Ubuntu or Kubuntu??
Please tell us exactly what happens when you boot the K/Ubuntu system.

Also, are you using any third party repositories on your system, including those PPA repositories???

For reference, see this for how to install KDE on Ubuntu:
http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/kde
And should you wish to purge all traces of Ubuntu and just go with a pure Kubuntu system, see this:
http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/purekubuntu

Note that for the best results, a clean install of Kubuntu would give you a pristine Kubuntu system without any of the left over detritus from a Ubuntu install that added Kubuntu and then attempted to purge Ubuntu from your new Kubuntu system.

Upgrade your system to linux-image-3.2.0-32-generic (3.2.0-32.51). This is a known issue and should be fixed as of 10/15/2012.

Thanks - I've no idea how to do this, but I intend to upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10 tomorrow when it comes out. The first Beta had a later Linux image than you mention, so I imagine that the stable release should be OK.

Quote:

Quantal Beta-2 includes the 3.5.0-15.23 Ubuntu Linux kernel which was based on the v3.5.4 upstream Linux kernel.
I have been using Kubuntu as I prefer the KDE Desktop Manager to Unity, but I prefer the programs and utilities that come with Ubuntu, so I am going to try installing Ubuntu then changing to the KDE Plasma desktop. With my limited understanding of Window Managers and Desktop Managers (I'm still not sure of where one stops and the other starts) that should be entertaining!

From a terminal;

sudo apt-get update

Followed by;
sudo apt-get upgrade

Don't want to change your mind or anything,... but 12.04 is a Long Term Support (LTS) release (3+ years). Ver. 12.10 will not be (18 mos., I think)... There is a certain level of pain when upgrading, no matter how well they've done their bug-hunt.

Just FYI...

JaseP
I didn't realise that I could upgrade to the latest kernel that easily! I did update and then upgrade - nothing happened, but I always accept the latest automatic updates so maybe I've already got it. I haven't had the problem recently either.

Thanks for the very sensible warning. I'm not too bothered about the LTS and I know from past experience that when I upgrade to 12.10 I'm likely to have a few hiccups. If it all goes pear-shaped I shall either just go back to 12.04 or swap to another distribution. I've had to do that a few times now! I stuck with Ubuntu for quite a while as it was reliable and it suited me perfectly, then along came Unity, sigh......

Chris.Bristol 11-03-2012 10:06 AM

I've upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 plus Gnome Classic, it's reliable and is more to my taste.

You are not the only one.
Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity got a rather poor review on distrowatch.com this week:
http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?is...121029#feature
Not surprisingly, Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity is reported there to be significantly slower, than the same setup on 12.04. Using Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome Fallback improved things for the reviewer.

Meanwhile, I am happy to report that Lubuntu 12.10 with the LXDE desktop is just as light and snappy as it has always been!

Actually I meant ...more to my taste than Kubuntu. With Unity it isn't a matter of taste, it is completely unusable (IMHO).

Haha! I already have Lubuntu on my old laptop, but I will take your hint and upgrade it - provided doing so doesn't **** up the wireless access that took quite a while to get working...
