Kubuntu edgy && nVidia 6800GT

Okay, so I'm not completely new to linux, but I really don't understand what's happening here. I've got a fresh install of Kubuntu edgy, with an nVidia 6800GT card in the box. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-K8U-939 and the processor is an AMDx64 FX-55.

From what I've read, installing the nVidia binary drivers should be simple, just run:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx

And then:

sudo nvidia-xconfig

And restart X and off you go. Of course, it's not that simple. What happens to me is that I restart X, and my monitor goes into "no signal" mode. It's a Viewsonic VP2030b. I suppose at this point I should reveal too, that I have an old CRT that I'd like to set up as a second monitor, a Samsung SyncMaster 955DF, but at this point I'd be happy to have one monitor running at higher than 1024x768

Also, my purpose for installing the binary drivers is two fold: like everyone, I think it would be cool to get beryl running. Second, I can't get enough of Quake 4 rails. Both of these things I've done before (albeit on an ATI card), so that shouldn't be too hard.

Here's the xorg.conf that nvidia-xconfig generates:

Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder26) Mon Oct 16 22:13:48 PDT 2006

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

did you change anything in the file manually or specify imporper horizontal or vertical rates?

i would try and uninstall the drivers just installed, and install the official nvidia ones (link for AMD64). they really are quite easy to install (you have to exit X-server and install from a console). once installed again run the nvidia-xconfig utility then startx again.
