Kubuntu, digikam and canon powershot

I have trouble with the above combination. I am using kubuntu 5.10 and the latest digikam, and it cannot acccess my powershot. It detects it fine, but won't show or download pictures. I get the error "Failed to connect to camera. Please make sure its connected properly and turned on. Would you like to try again?"

I tried it with a friend's EOS D20 and was able to access it with PTP (not normal mode), but my powershot doesn't have that.

Please help.

Can you actually mount the camera as USB mass storage device and then browse the files through your file manager? If it's detecting the camera okay (I'm assuming you're refering to /var/log/messages displaying the camera being detected), then within Digikam, you should be able to go to Tools | Add Camera then scroll down to 'USB Mass Storage device' before telling it which device to use, such as /dev/sda1. Has worked fine with 3 or 4 cameras I've tried that haven't been explicitly supported by Digikam. There's a ton of resources on these forums for mounting USB mass storage devices manually if you come across problems.

Thank you for that hint. I bought a card reader today, but will try your suggestion also.

Okay, let us know how it goes. Pretty much *any* (USB ;) ) camera should work as USB mass storage allowing you to grab the photos. Same with the USB card reader you've got - you should be able to add that into Digikam and download your photos through that.
