Kubuntu 6.06 How-To

I put together a How-to for installing Kubuntu. It's all screen shot driven and quite a few folks have had pretty good success with it. Here is the link. http://www.linuxloader.com/modules.p...howpage&pid=28

I changed the format some and now everything is contained in a linked document. Let me know what you think.

5 GB for the system partition (excluding /home) ain't enough ... I'm using 9 GB now (without /home), just a few months after a fresh install (admittedly, I install everything) ...

On Linux, I read, it's possible to resize partitions (with data) though.

HMMMM I've been running Linux for about 6 years now and I have yet to fill a 5 gig system partition. If you look at the bottom of page 5 of the How-To it has a 5GB partition for /, a 1Gb partition for swap and the rest of the disk for /home. My fully configured Kubuntu desktop is running about 3.3Gb so 5.0 will be just fine. I also mention at the top of page five that 10Gb is fine but anything more is pretty much wasted space.

Besides you can't install "everything" from the Kubuntu desktop CD. The installer installs a base system which is actually pretty small. Also this How-to is geared to the beginner. and besides, why would you want to install "everything"?? I hope you don't mean all the available servers and all. That's just not wise in a desktop install.....

Are you talking in terms of economy ("wasted"), and philosophy ("wisdom")?
I'm pretty sure there are more users like myself who want to check everything out ... Hey, it's fun, and you do learn by that!

Yes. Anything over 10GB is a waste of space for a DESKTOP install. A DESKTOP install is for using desktop apps. Not server apps. I would never tell a user to "load everything". Its very insecure and just too much on a single install. What would I do with apps like Bind and a couple different types of database servers on a DESTOP???

Well, that's a stringent argument chain, indeed. I hope I'll get your hints before I'm 70 y.o.

I have Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Ubuntu installed on one partition along with my /home (but not my documents--those are on a separate partition) and all the programs I installed and use, and this is how much space I've used:
Code:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda7 8.8G 3.2G 5.2G 39% /

Don't know what you mean but the whole thing about a partition size is a for working box specificly for a new user loading Kubuntu from the desktop cd.
