I would recommend installing wicd from the Ubuntu repos. In my opinion wicd is superior and much easier to use than Ubuntu's network-manager.
First, uninstall network-manager and network-manager-gnome so there are no conflicts between network-manager and wicd. Then install wicd and try to enable the internet cafe wireless with wicd.
If you ever want to go back to network-manager for any reason, simply uninstall wicd and reinstall network-manager and network-manager-gnome and you will be back where you started from.
