Kill all sounds!
Why can't Kubuntu let me leave all application & system sounds off? Where, how to kill all "notifications" permanently without stopping normal music & voice output?
This is persistent Kubuntu problem since last summer: set all sounds off, next update enables system sounds. Same problem from 6.06 thru latest Hardy versions.

K- System Settings - Sound & Multimedia - System Notifications
Event Source = "Kde system notifications"
You see a list of "Events". If any one of them has a speaker icon in the left column, click on it
The speaker icon disappears, and so does the sound for that event.
Do the same for all events with speaker icons.
Then click "Apply".
You are done.

Kill All Sounds
Yes, have repeatedly done that, effectively. System is then quiet, music in nice, audio voice recordings work OK. Then after a routine system update, it beeps loudly for adept manager failure, new mail or some system error.
I suppose some KDE or script writer knows my computer should wake the family at odd times, that I am wrong to want a silent computer except when I choose.
