Keyboard not working after wake up form suspend on HP Probook 6550b

So I have had this problem for a while that when I put my laptop to sleep, the keyboard then doesn't work. My external USB mouse works and my touchpad is disabled (so not an option). Please guide me to troubleshoot this.
P.S: I am a newbie to Linux so might need some detailed instructions.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Problem was also present on 18.04 LTS)

I've had the same problem in XUbuntu since version 19.10: wake from sleep leaves the keyboard inert on most programs. I get around it by opening the command line (where the programs are). In XUbuntu it's up in the left hand corner. I open the search block for programs, type in something random like kdjsalfkjalfakj close the block and then bingo: I can type again in programs or the terminal.

Well the problem is that I can't get past the login screen after wake because I can't type my password, so I don't know if my keyboard is totally unresponsive or for some programs
