Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown block(0,0)

Hi,

I have just recently installed Ubuntu Version 6.06 on my pc and after the second reboot I got the above error.

I have made no kernel upgrades and have installed no packages that would cause this.

On another forum someone said something about looking at the grub.conf file for clues, but i cant find that file. It doesn't seem to be in the boot/grub directory.

the conf file is /boot/grub/menu.1st
there are a lot of threads for this issue, a few of the similar thread links at the bottom of the page should get a solution.
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/man...-GRUB-natively
for the section of the manual that seems to be most usefull, setting up grub from its own command line has always worked OK for me.
this seems to be a recent issue with ubuntu, it doesn't seem to be to hard to fix though.
cheers,
stan
