kernel in ubuntu

hi there

i am facing this kind of problem for the first time in my kernel comiling series

i ahve compiled a custom kernel 2.6.11.7 for kubuntu 5.04
i did as i have been doing it on mandrake, fedora, skack etc etc
th mknintrd part is different
i tried

mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd-2.6.11.7.125.img 2.6.11.7.125

and whnei loa this kernel it stucks to
kernel panic-not able to mount on root (0.0)

now here comes the funny part, the kenrel that i compiled with the same config file on slackware ,works fine here on ubuntu
but the same config file does not work here

so i think there is something wrong in my mkinitrd file

but i wonder what it is ??

regards

Same thing happens if you try to install the "2.6.11-x" kernel through Synaptic.. I've tried getting hte kernel through Synaptic and compiling my own, and it freezes up right passed the login GUI. A few people on the Ubuntu forum have the same problem, so I'm sure itll be fixed in the next update.

i do not know why it is that but

when i removed the description of the initrd image form my grub.conf and only kept the vmlinux ,the kernel is working fine
and the default kernel of ubuntu use initrd file as mentioned in grub.conf file

regards
