keep getting invalid login when trying to login via telnet

Hi,

I am having a problem with login to IMAP Server. On my Ubuntu Server 10.04 32bits, I installed Postfix, Dovecot IMAP Server, Squirrelmail and OpenLDAP.

After the installation of Postfix, I tested it by sending myself (user1@localhost) to another user (user2@localhost), and it works. Because I use Maildir, I checked under user2/Maildir - I saw the email I sent from user1 to user2, so that's good.

I then went to install Dovecot. After setting up all the configuration, I used telnet to check if I could login to check emails as user2. I use it as IMAP server.

Example:
telnet localhost 143
Trying ::1...
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost
Escape character is '^]'.
* OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE STARTTLS AUTH=PLAIN AUTH=LOGIN] Dovecot IMAP server!
user user1
user BAD Error in IMAP command received by server

I could not get any further than this.

I then tried it with POP3

telnet localhost pop3
Trying ::1...
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK Dovecot IMAP Server!
user user2
+OK
pass secrets
-ERR Authentication failed
user user2@localhost
+OK
pass secrets
-ERR Authentication failed

I checked in /var/log/dovecot-deliver.log, I got as follows
- auth(default): Info: client out:FAIL 3 user=user2
- auth(default): Info: client in: AUTH 4 PLAIN service=pop3 secured lip=127.0.0.l rip=127.0.0.1 lport=110 rport: resp...
- auth(default): ldap(user2,127.0.0.1): invalid credentials (given password: secrets)

I have spent hours and hours figuring out why it did work but to no avail. I guess my knowledge of linux system is limited.

Please help me out. Any help would be great.

Thank you

You are using the wrong syntax for talking to the IMAP server.
Follow the instructions on this page:
http://bobpeers.com/technical/telnet_imap

Don't forget to preceede every command you enter with a number, or with the '-' character.
