KDE won't load after apt-get update: Kubuntu x86_64

Hey all,
I was just wondering if this has happened to some of you as well, and if so, did you find out how to fix it?

I ran a sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade. Since it loaded some kernel packages, I thought a system restart was in order.

So KDM loads. I input my password, and the system hangs on the splash screen for a bit, then I arrive back at the KDM login screen.

I'm able to log into console mode. I've tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and running off of the free nv driver, but nothing seems to work. I've attempted running startx from console, but after the little freeze I'm looking at the console again. I'm then looking at 2 error messages:

(WW) Warning, couldn't open module type1
(II) Module already built in

I've attached a copy of Xorg.0.log, but I've tried messing around with xorg.conf (commenting out various modules) and I don't thing xorg is at fault here.

System:
Kubuntu Gutsy x86_64
Nvidia 7600GS
Core 2 Duo 2400 GHz

The log is here. I've removed various hardware ranges for brevity.

I had the same problem in debian. Not suare what caused it but the way i fixed it was to login under the cli and remove kde completely and the install it again. Not the answer you're after but if worse comes to worse give that a try

I attempted reinstalling kdm, kdebase, and all kde packages dependent on these. This unfortunately didn't work. I installed fluxbox, and this loads properly.

Trying to run kicker in fluxbox gave me the error:

kdecore (KLocale): WARNING: Definition of PluralForm is none of NoPlural/TwoForms/French/OneTwoRest/Russian/Polish/Slovenian/Lithuanian/Czech/Slovak/Arabic/Balcan/Macedonian/Gaeilge/Maltese: Definition of PluralForm - to be set by the translator of kdelibs.po

Searching that one came up with an interesting result. From the Ubuntu fora:

Quote:
This is indeed a language problem.

dpkg -r language-pack-kde-en
dpkg -r language-pack-kde-en-base

or whatever other kde language packs are installed.

There's a bug report in that also says you can change the language to us-english and that will fix it as well.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...bs/+bug/191327

sudo qt-language-selector --mode select

I re-installed my system at work this morning because of this. It's pretty stupid that a language pack problem would cause a complete failure of kde.
I'll post back if this works

I removed all my language packs:

sudo dpkg -r language-pack-kde-en language-pack-kde-base language-pack-kde-fr language-pack-kde-fr-base

And I'm now able to load KDE.

Unfortunately now I'm forced to use US English.

Have you tried reinstalling the language packs you need after removing them?

Yes, and the issue reappeared. Apparently this is a well known bug in the kubuntu repos, and happened on the Feb 12th update. The problem for me was I didn't have the right error message, and searching 'KDE won't load after update' so many different ways yields an infinite amount of results.

For those interested, the bug link is here.

Presumably the "module type1" is for type one fonts in the X server? I'd have thought that most fonts used would not be "type 1".

Can you just open up /etc/X11/xorg.conf, with your favourite text editor *, and then comment out the line
Code:
Load "type1"
by adding a "#" at the start of the line.

* you'll need to do this as root, eg keypresses "Alt-F2; kdesudo konsole; {your password}; nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf {in the konsole window}". The line to comment is in the third section (on my box) called "Modules". Then "Ctrl-X {to exit}; y {to save}; Enter {to confirm name of file}; Alt-F4 {close konsole}". Then use Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart the X server.

Can't be sure this will work, but worth a try. If it fails, just do the same thing but remove the "#".

Just tried this move on my fully working Ubuntu + KDE, no obvious problems.

I originally tried commenting it out awhile back, and when this didn't fix the language pack issue, I removed the comment to restore the state of my xorg.conf.

But it's true, I should recomment that line, since I think the module type1 is no longer a module but built into the x-server now.
