KDE on Ubuntu vs. Kubuntu
 

I'd be interested to hear why people prefer Kubuntu over simply loading Ubuntu and then adding KDE via: sudo apt-get install kde

I had tried Kubuntu before and liked it but didn't like that it didn't have the ubuntu update-notifier and ubuntu update-manager.

I just loaded KDE in Ubuntu and noticed that when in KDE, I can still use both update-notifier and update-manager.

update-notifier will even reside in the kde panel. I see these two packages and a solid advantage over kubuntu.

What do othe people think? What advantages might kubuntu might have?

Correct me if i'm wrong but in kubuntu couldn't you just apt-get such features? And maybe people like kubuntu because its quickier to have it all set up if your on a slow connection, kde is a big download.

You are supposed to be able to install KDE over Ubuntu, but I couldn't get it to work once. The repositories had been acting up in the past, so it might have been a temporary situation. You should end up with the same thing when everything is installed.

KDE on Ubuntu is flaky and doesn't work well. Kubuntu, on the other hand, has KDE preinstalled and so will work better.

I very much agree with Xavier. What's more, although I do admire gnome, I prefer KDE or xfce. If I need a good gnome app like gaim, I can simply apt-get it. Even then, there's always the kde alternative (kopete) or independent apps (amsn, which I use) to choose from.

I'd love to hear other stories about KDE being apt-getted into Ubuntu. This is what I did. While it has been good to use, if it is even better by using Kubuntu, then I am there. And what about the opposite scenario? Has any one inserted gnome into Kubuntu?

I know you guys want to run it on Ubuntu.... but just for the record, SuSe + K are as rock solid as you can get... and Yast isn't that bad either.

I came to Ubuntu from Suse 9.3. Very solid, but also very slow. Suse took quite some time to boot up, then when up, it was very sluggish. Moving from Suse to Ubuntu I was practically knocked of my chair. I love it, it is quick and with very little work, everything is smooth and very functional. If only I could solve this VCD issue.

Must say, I am very impressed with Ubuntu, much better than Suse if you're using the GUI - which is a lot more responsive and has much nicer themes available.

What VCD issue? PS I see kubuntu mentioned in regular ubuntu's "about" box.. I guess theyre just about the same, save for K/G :)

I'm also coming over from SuSE 9.3. I agree - SuSE is so much more sluggish than Ubuntu. And deb packages and the Ubuntu repositories make it so much easier to set things up in Ubuntu over Suse.

But, I prefer the themes and look of SuSE, especially the SuSE Windows Decoration, which I miss and would love to find a way to get it in to Ubuntu.

And fonts render much better in SuSE. Ubuntu really needs to fix this as it creates a terrible first impression.

In terms of loading KDE in Ubuntu via apt-get, I can't find the disadvantage over Kubuntu yet. People in this thread has said it's flakier than Kubuntu but that has not been my experience yet. sudo apt-get install kde took care of everything. Simple as pie.

Plus, I can use the Ubuntu update tools in KDE-Ubuntu, which Kubuntu does not have. That's my main reason for trying to stick with Ubuntu. Finally, Kubuntu, even though it says it's not a fork, seems awfully fork-like. Its developers even insisted on having a different distro name, against the wishes of Ubuntu, and it's very consciously branding itself very differently, as it piggybacks on Ubuntu.

So, my preference is to directly support Ubuntu with KDE until I can find a clear advantage of using Kubuntu.

I have to agreed with you, first, i used Red Hat 7, quite good, first exeperiences with X console, but it was a pain in the ass, because you had to do almost everything like in console mode, then i changed to Suse 9.3, very good, but it was too slow, then i changed to Ubuntu 6.06, and I love it, i still use it altough we have now 7.04 but, in general for me Ubuntu rocks, is fast, is reliable and until now, i didnt have a single problem and i use it for development.

Kubuntu uses Adept to update, I have the green blob on my taskbar witing for updates.

I put Kubuntu over Ubuntu 7.04 by going to synaptic and selecting KUBUNTU-DESKTOP and all went well. Am using it with no problem. I still have to figure out how to automatically login when booting. Aslo the restart feature disappeared when trying to shut down? working on that....

And it's working perfectly fine for me... Maybe it has something to do with how KDE gets added, as a metapackage or as individual parts? That shouldn't make any difference but still ... Anyway, I used the latter approach and KDE has been rock stable to this day.
