I tried installing jedit, but something went wrong. now I get the following error:
E: The package jedit needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it .
How can I get rid of this error. I am new to linux, and do not know how to handle these errors. Also, I cannot find anything in the package manager, or update.
Thanks.
You've probably installed the jedit .deb package you've downloaded from the jedit download site. Try reinstalling from there.
As a general rule of thumb, take care when installing applications from other places than the Ubuntu repositories (that is, by not using Synaptic, Adept, resp., apt-get). These "other" applications may or may be not compatible (or, at least, installing them requires additional knowledge).
A bit more likely,
you've installed jedit by adding additional repositories:

To install jEdit via Debian Linux apt-get, add the following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list:
Not sure where the error comes from, but it appears re-installing by either re-installing the .deb or by adding the sources again, and do a refresh before updating should help.
- It would be helpful if you'd remembered how you'd installed jedit, initially.
The credit goes to GWILMA from the jedit forums....

Hello Jopy. I had the same problem, and still don't have a way of installing jedit. The workaround I found changes the status of the program to installed, so you can still use dpkg, apt-get etc.
To do this, I edited /var/lib/dpkg/status. Find the section that refers to jedit, and change the line "Status" to say something like "Status: install ok installed"
If you then do apt-get update, you should find that the system no longer tries to install/remove jedit, and you can continue as before.
This will probably leave some cruft around on your machine, but for me it's worth it to be able to carry on installing programs (albeit without using jedit).

for now leave it but u can use ubuntu.... then check back every two weeks to see if someone found a way around it .. if not keep on trying..!
Thanks, kosak, for the information. I did what gwilma AND robbert suggested: removed jedit package, and then installed it back by issuing "sudo apt-get install jedit".
Now, I have on my xubuntu, jEdit 4.2Final.
Thank you, folks =)
I tried the sudo apt~~~~~~ but it didn't work that's why I posted this one so others with the same problem can work around it... actually if you then go to the synaptic manager and uninstall the Jedit it will be out for good
