ISA PCMCIA card reader in Ubuntu, so many questions
 

I am so frustrated now trying to get this thing to work. I installed an ISA PCMCIA card reader in the ISA bus in a Dell T500 Pentium 3. I installed Ubuntu 5.04, then used to package manager and installed pcmcia-cs package. That didn't do anything, so I have been reading all day online, and am just getting nowhere.

1. I have read I might need to rebuild the kernel to enable pcmcia support, which i can find usually in /usr/src... not on my system. Where is the kernel source in Ubuntu? <--newb question

2. I read to try setting CONFIG_ISA to YES in the startup files. I don't know where these files are. Is this something I set when I make the kernel? <--newb question

3. Someone else on this forum suggested editing a file with PCMCIA=YES... There is no /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia to edit. There isn't even etc/sysconfig. fug!

4. The same user who suggested #3 said I could run /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start to start the PCMCIA service or whatever.... there is no etc/rc.d... just a lot of rcX.d where X is a number 0-6 or the letter S... well I finally found /etc/rc1.d/K20pcmcia but when i ran that script as root I got the alert *PCMCIA not present.

Man this is making me crazy! Oh yeah, and one other thing that is messed up... If I try su root and enter my password, I am told I have the wrong password... i dunno I suppose I could have forgetten since yesterday, but when I log in to Gnome as a regular user and choose Root Terminal from the System Tools, I get a root terminal without even trying a password. I don't know, this is all weird. I just want my card reader working! thanks.

I figured out one answer to my root question. Ubuntu doesn't have a traditional root account login out of the box. You need to type sudo passwd root.
