is ubuntu under-using my CPU?

I have a AMD athlon 64 3000+ that runs at 1.8ghz, but when I check the cpu speed in ubuntu by going 'less /proc/cpuinfo' in a terminal it says that it runs at 1ghz and has a bogomips of 2012.
Any ideas?

hey,

Ubuntu could be using the powernow features of your cpu to scale the frequency, try:

lsmod

Look to see if there is a module called powernow-k8, also look in the /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ directory if theres a load of files in there look at the one called scaling governor that will tell you the policy linux is using to scale the pc. See the man pages for more details.

Hope that helps

Chris.
