Is it possible to add a ppa from Launchpad to 12.04 beta?
 

Hi.

Anyone had the problem of re-enabling a launchpad ppa that was from a current release up to the 12.04 beta releases of the new Ubuntu? I'm find this seems to be a problem is other distros that are in Alpha or Beta.

I've enabled the repo in Update Manager settings again now in 12.04 but again like always, when updating sources, it skips the ppa repo for Oneiric?

Is it just a matter of waiting for the developer to port it to the new release?

It may be.
As a matter of policy when you do a dist-upgrade from one version of Ubuntu to the next version all third party repos are disabled until after the upgrade is complete. Since 12.04 is not finalised yet, your PPA repo may be held back.

Here is how I avoid any and all problems with Ubuntu that seem to plague so many users:
1. I always do clean installs of the new releases of Ubuntu. I have never done a dist-upgrade.
2. I always avoid third party repos, including those all to often problematic PPA repos.
I have used every single version of Ubuntu since the inaugural 4.10 and I have never had a problem upgrading Ubuntu.

Well I myself started with 10.04 when I first discovered Linux. And shortly after the whole GNOME transitioning happened but I didn't understand Unity like I do now so I for the last year completely avoided it. But I decided no matter the outcome of 12.04 and the "Heads up" concept I'd heard about, the thing is you can still download kde or Openbox and avoid Unity anyway. But you know, I installed 10.04 this morning, updated it completely and thought to just try and get the few PPAs and non-free codecs I needed but then just do a complete Ubuntu guided jump to what they've been working on.

I have to say, I really like the new Unity look for some reason. Even now in Beta mode, it isn't buggy like it was for me a year ago with 11.04. But I was on a totally different computer then. Anyhow, this 12.04 is looking very promising.

I still avoid Unity. Since Ubuntu swtiched to Unity, and since Gnome is now more interested in supporting mobile devices than my desktop and laptop, and since I have never wanted to even bother to try to figure out KDE, I have switched to the light and fast and oh so simple Lubuntu with the LXDE desktop.
Problem solved.

I now use Lubuntu and Slackware with XFCE. No smartphone interfaces on my computers; and I can easily find what I need without any fussing around with these new UIs that are more suited to mobile devices than my computers!!!

Note that the new Gnome 4 desktop is simply a totally blank blue screen. Is that supposed to be progress ????

Well, between working with GNOME as best I could to be fair to it, it's just gets to me after a short while. And so Fedora uses it, and now I guess its the default still in Debian Testing (Wheezy) and while any desktop other than GNOME in Wheezy is actually stable, GNOME is buggy as all can be! So after all the failed attempts there, Unity isn't bad at all in comparison.

Still, I'm mostly a KDE person now since I got a laptop with plenty of RAM and CPU power so I'm content there. But yes, XFCE is good as well and Lubuntu too.

how to auto-hide it?

Yes it does, future computer. System Settings > appearance > then click the behaviour tab at the top left of the appearance window. You will see the option then.
