Intel 915GV Video Issues
Hi I don't seem to have any video acceleration on my Intel 915GV system (915GV is onboard video also - but it's fine for watching movies etc, which is all I really do with it).
If I run glxgears I just get a message saying:
Code:
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
On the whole Nvidia and ATI cards I could deal with, but I don't have much experience with Intel Video chips.
These are the modules I currently have loaded:

[code]Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL family"
Driver "i810"
BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection
[code]
You are using the i810 driver, you could try the experimental "intel" driver instead.
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel
However, the 810 driver should be fine:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=140259
... you can add
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
... to the device section above and see if that makes a difference.
You may want to play with the video bios with 915resolution
sudo apt-get install 915resolution
With regard to the GLX error - have you been running an nvidia or ATI card previously?

Done all that. Still no luck.
What is the experimental driver called? Maybe I should put that in my xorg.conf file instead?
As far as I recall I have tried several distros on this system and the video just worked 'out of the box.'
I have no idea why this isn't the case for the Ubuntu.

No I haven't - and it's a fresh Ubuntu install - so again it is suprising that the video isn't working out of the box.
There is a driver from Intel - but that is very old and it doesn't compile on my recent version of Ubuntu.
TBH I can't work out why the native Xorg driver isn't working. By rights it should be - and it shouldn't take anything special to get it working either.

Have you tried any other 3D programs? (3ddesk?)

Yeah did that bit. Just to get it straight though the driver name in xorg.conf is "intel", that's it, nothing else?
Yeah I have a bunch of GL screensavers and they don't work either.
As I said its a tad whack, as I haven't had any video problems with the half dozen or so other distros I have had on this sytem over the last year.
Just Ubuntu.
I guess I could try buying an Nvidia card - but I'm in a tight spot and need to save money - and it seems a shame when the video works in other distros. I'm just spending money for nothing then.
I have to say though that the rest of the sytem is working great. I've used KDE for 6 years - and this is the first serious look I have had at Gnome - and TBH I am really preferring it right now.
They are really very comparable - but Gnome just seems to have the edge on a nice clean layout and a nicely organised menu sytem.

As stated, the i810 driver is usually sufficient - besides, many other distros ship with the intel driver as well.
Now here's a puzzle: I last saw use of this driver in fedora - there it was called "intel" and that was all... like "nvidia" right. But if I do "man intel" I get the i810 man page...
So here is the thing - try using the name "intel" ... if it don't work, try uninstalling the i810 driver (sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-i810) and using the driver name "i810".
In fact, the intel driver site also says the driver name is "i810" so now I'm wondering where I got this from.
