Installing Ubuntu

Hi! I just downloaded and burnt a copy of Ubuntu. I went to install it on a computer that has windows xp and 2000 server on it---I'm going to get rid of the xp. I figured in the install , it would let me delete the xp partition, then format it to linux. The menu screen came up and I checked the disk integrity---no problems. I then clicked on install, and something about the swapfile, with (ok), then something else, with (ok), then the screen went blank. I waited a few minutes, then pressed enter, and the cd ejected the disk. I pushed it back in, and nothing happened. I pressed ctl, alt, delete, and nothing happened. The computer was locked up. What is happening? I had another copy of Ubuntu I bought with linux xp, and the same thing happened with both of those disks. I tried them on a different computer with the same results. That Ubuntu disk, after trying to install it, I checked the integrity, and it failed. Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the response. I didn't compile this copy of Ubuntu---just downloaded and burned it, if that's waht you're referring to. I'm a newbie, so I'm not sure what you are saying. Are these commands to add to the install menu? If so, how do I do that? Thanks.

Don't know what could be wrong. Try it again? Or even burn it again?

Ubuntu installation for me (while INSANELY slow) worked like a breeze. Only *nix system I've been able to install first time with zero problems. Most problems are me being stupid, but still.

Thanks for the responses. I just did the md5sum, and it failed for pages. I used the wayne ftp at the ubuntu site. Where can I find a site where the iso is good? Also what is the alternate iso? Thanks.

Well there's your problem .
Use the link from Ubuntu.com - and choose a server near you. Ubuntu*.alternate.iso should be available on most servers. But it looks like you don't really need the alternate install, you just need a good iso.

You can also try burning at a slower rate. I've experienced(and saw many posts on here), where burning an iso slower, fixed the problem. Why this is, I really don't know. Try burning the CD/DVD at a nice slow pace, maybe 2-4x. If that doesn't work, the alternate install CD is a good option. I've only had 1 system that wouldn't take the "normal" iso(my laptop), but using the Alternate Install CD worked fine. Only real difference is the Alternate Install CD, is a text install(its still very easy)

I've never tried the DVD versions of Ubuntu, but if its like the CD versions, then yes, you should be able to boot to the desktop w/o installing provided its burned correctly.

Hello again. I tried burning it at 2x speed, but with the same results. The disk integrity is fine, and the md5sum matches the ubuntu hash. Is this just something wrong with the 6.10? Thanks.

Again, I've never used the Ubuntu dvd's, just the CD's, but assuming its like the CD's, then yes, it should be a Live DVD.

Sounds like you'll want to try the Alternate Install CD. it is a text-based installer(but its easy),

http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUb...irect=download

Click on any of the mirrors, then choose "other Installation options".. Then download the Ubuntu 6.10 Alternate Install CD.iso, burn it and restart.
