Installing Software From Behind A Proxy

After reading this article in eWeek I have decided to give Ubuntu a fair shake. I have come over from Suse where I started in v9 and I like the lack of bloatedness that this distro represents.

The product installed and functions flawlessly on my laptop which is an old Compaq Armada E500. However, at work i seem to be unable to install software and when I run update manager i am told there are no updates available even though i know this to be untrue.

I have configured the network proxy and I am able to surf just fine, but i cannot install new software or updates. At first I thought I missed something in Samba, but I can hit the M$ Windows resources just fine.

Please give me a shove in the right direction if you know what I should check. I am running Ubuntu 5.10 on a 2.8GHz P4-HT, 1GB RAM, 48GB SCSI Disk. The computer is a branded Dell Optiplex GX210.

I receive the following error: W: Couldn't stat source package list http://archive.ubuntu.com breezy/universe Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_breezy_universe_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)

Thanks!

OK, I dug a lil deeper and realised that Synaptic also requires manual proxy configuration. However, there is no place for username & password. Sorry folks but I do not know to to include this in the address under linux. Once I know how ... here comes the updates. Please help. Thanks

your problem is that you want to bypass MSproxy or MSISA server, which understand only NTLM.
the choise :
- include a socks client in your ubuntu (many exist)
- use NTLM Authorization server : some script uses python libray to emulate NTLM. it act like a gatway on a linux box to by pass proxy

Dang it! When your right, your right and it is an ISA Proxy. I guess I'll just need to take the PC home and run from there. Merci! for your assistance

for the home application, you need to use VPN, other wise inside the proxy you see your home, but at your home, how do know the ip of box inside ? solution openvpn across a httptunnel across a SSH.
i studie it at this moment : we are a MSproxy inside a firewall, that i don't know for moment. from inside to outside, all work well, i can connect to my home and see all i shared.
but from my home, the firewall bloc my sends from home.
