installing new 1.0.8 nvidia drivers via offical installer

Am using ubuntu 5.10 breezy witht the latest drivers however everytime they are installed they work fine but as soon as I reboot it complains saying theres a mismatch with the kernel module and the x module. I reckon ubuntu installed the kernel module itself because it was there even when it was a fresh installation of unbuntu. How do I get rid of it? I didn't see an option for this in the installer.

there are multiple versions available

Hello,

I had the exact same error and was tearing my hair out trying to resolve the problem.

It turned out I had both nvidia-legacy and nvidia modules installed. I had to use apt or synaptic to remove all the legacy modules before it worked again.

HTH

Just another word of thanks.. I was having a similar problem-- I had installed the nvidia drivers with the nvidia installer, and had not (knowingly) installed any nvidia things in Kubuntu through adept. Everything would work fine until I rebooted, and then X wouldn't start as explained above. On your advice, I fired up adept, and filtered on "nvidia" and removed all the packages there. Voila, things are now working (after a reboot).

Funny how trying to make things easier (adept packages instead of Nvidia's installer) made things a lot harder for me.. I had worked on this problem for hours before finding this post.

Anyway, thanks again!
