installing mplayer
 

I'm trying to install mplayer, created the /usr/local/lib/codecs dir, but when I extract to the dir I get the following msg:

Extraction not performed

You don't have the right permissions to extract archives in the folder "/usr/local/lib"

suggestions

Are you doing this as root or user?
Which distro, you list two in your sig.

running as user on Ubuntu

You want to use
sudo <command>
password:
the sudo password is usually the 1st's accounts password.

sudo tar xvfz file.tgz
password: ******

You could avoid this problem by using Synaptic to install mplayer. Despite what some Linux users say, the Linux Gods won't curse you if you use a GUI.
