What applcations are you trying to use? If the applcation are checked in the menu then you should be able to use them. You might need to issue this command
killall gnome-panel
Thne the applcations should show up and you should be able to use them.
If you did a "server" install, it's a minimal install and no apps are installed. Servers don't use stuff like x-windows and openoffice.... If you want those install a deskto install.
i tried what you said it returned an error message E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)i tried to intall gnome and x-server i cant get past the server install i dont want to give up on ubuntu i used it for over a year but im getting nowhere i tried sudo apt-get -f install it started to work then told me it was read-only so i mounted rw then when i tried install -f i got rhis error messagefailed to open /var/lib/dpkg/status Sub-process returned error code(2)
well after much work i got x-server started however im told the human theme is broken i still have no icons or menus but i think im going in the right direction
if it's not installed, you could get the ubuntu-artwork and ubuntu-sounds packages, that has the default themes.
Also you could try installing all the dependences of ubuntu-desktop (there are 252 dependences) and see which one fails and decide if you want/need that package.
i cant do that now every time i reboot fsck runs saying the filesystem is corrupt it goes and deletes corrupt files and i lose my xserver install its there one minute then gone the next
