installing C++ program and compiler in ubuntu 9.04


hi dear all
i have no idea about ubuntu but i'm starting to use this OS
i have to use 9.04 version because i have installed open foam software on this version and the latest version have some problem for running this program in solving problems,
by this way i have to install C++ programmer and compiler on my ubuntu but because of my out of date version of ubuntu i couldn't use ubuntu software center.
if any body has any idea please help me.

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
... And then replace the text with :

deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty multiverse universe
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty-updates main restricted
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty-updates multiverse universe
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty-backports main restricted
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty-backports multiverse universe
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty-security main restricted
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty-security multiverse universe
Next : sudo apt-get update
.. And you should be able to use synaptic etc. for package install.

AFAIK, build-essential package is available on the Ubuntu CD itself.
So you can install directly from the CD -

#sudo apt-get install build-essential

if you have any reference or helpful sites or books that i can learn C++ programming in short time, please introduce me.
