Installed Ubuntu on Acer emachine 520 and wireless will not work...

The Acer emachine has been a subject on other forums since it was shipped with only Linpus Linux w/out GUI. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...t-boot-576433/

I am a new Linux user so this was a shock to me. I followed directions on this site as well as others and had no problem installing Ubuntu. So far I really like it.

My problem is, I cannot get my wireless button on the computer to operate, nor can I find a software app on Ubuntu that will turn on/off my wifi.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

That is odd about Linpus not having a GUI... I know it has a GUI on the Acer Aspire Ones....

Anyways, I've got an Acer Aspire One, and my wireless button doesn't work either. As for an easy way to turn off wireless, I use wicd network manager. When you want to turn your wifi off, just click it, and click disconnect.

Since you're using Ubuntu, its pretty easy to install. Just follow the instructions to add the wicd repository and it should install and work fine. Note, it will take the place of Network Manager, so after you install, restart to enable it.
