I installed jEdit (an IDE that is compatible with Java, which is what I need.) and it won't start. It made a new menu under Applications on Gnome, and I click on jEdit. On the bar it says "Starting Programmer's Text Editor" but it doesn't do anything after that. I typed jEdit into the console and got this.

After about 500 of the first line. I am running with only XMMS open (along with Gnome, ect...) and I have 512 megabytes of RAM with a 100 megabyte swap partition, so I am dumbfounded as to how this happened... I am a linux newbie, so please answer in the simplest way you can.

How did you install the application? Apt-get??

Jedit takes nothing in terms of ram or cpu processes. You might want to reboot and see what happens or logout and log back in.

If that does not work then you might want to uninstall and reinstall the application.

You error or problem is really wierd.

How did you install jEdit? Try getting the Java-based installer file directly from jedit.org. Install it with with java -jar jeditxxinstall.jar, where xx is the version you have (stable, pre, etc). My guess is that you are not running Sun's Java Virtual Machine, but a gcj virtual machine shipped with Ubuntu (among other distros) and that is just bad. Get the sun packages

A side note though. You are fine with memory, but 100MB is really small. Recommended size is twice you amount of physical memory. Not that it will give you any problems for what you are doing. But if you run a heavy game and you run out of physical memory your swap won't be enough...

Thank you for your responses. I did install it via Apt-get, so I need help uninstalling it. I tryed to install it via the .jar file, but could not understand how to do that... so... thanks for that info. I just need to know how to uninstall something that I got in apt-get.

EDIT: Google knows all. I will now try installing via the .jar file.
EDIT2: Argh... I tryed installing via .jar file and got "Failed to load Main-Class manifest attribute from jedit42install"... I think I installed Java incorrectly... does anyone know a good tutorial on how to install it?

also which version of java are you using? the one from sun or blackdown, gcj?

I couldn't understand how to install the one from Sun, so I installed the other one. I want to uninstall it so I can install the *real* version of Java, but only if I can find out how.

From my point of view. The only for sure way to install Java references using the automatix script located in this guide.

If you want to uninstall a program via apt-get then do the following.

sudo apt-get remove jedit
