I am trying to install either 8.04 or 8.10 on my tower system and have run into some snags. I think I have narrowed the problem down to the ide controller and possibly the graphics card, but I don't know what to do.
At first I was getting a bunch of squashfs errors. I read up a little and there seems to be an issue with the jmicron ide controller. I disabled the UDMA setting in the bios and the squashfs errors went away, so I think that confirms the ide controller issue. I also downloaded and burned a new cd and the errors were present on both cds so I am pretty sure that the cds are good, not to mention I have used one of them before. However, once the squashfs errors went away after disabling udma, I was trying to boot the live cd and got the following error:
"The display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90 seconds. It is likely that something bad is going on. Waiting for 2 minutes before trying again on the display :O."
I had a terminal screen only. So does this mean that not only is there an I/O problem but also a graphics card incompatibility too? Maybe this system just isn't right for linux? I would REALLY like to get ubuntu working on this system using udma.
Have you checked the HCL (hardware compatibility list) regarding the video card? If is is supported in Linux then you will need to look elseware for your problem.
