Installation goofiness

I have a test box I used to install Ubuntu 5.04 onto that worked without problem. It sat unused for awhile and recently I attempted to log on to the machine without recollection of signon name or password.

Since the machine did not have any data on it I tried to reinstall it from the bood CD (OEM disk). Things went well almost all the way through. I told it to delete partitions and configure as it saw fit.

Which is why I'm confused as to why I've received messages near the end of the install saying that I was possibly out of disk space. I do not have the exact message but if I ignore the message and move on it wants to take me to a text-based app called Aptitude. After downloading and installing some files it gets to a point where it offers a simple text-only logon but that's about it. Nothing GUI and I'm not even sure how far the install made it through.

I've used partition delete utilities and everything else I can think of to make enough space. Or am I even barking up the right tree? I had it installed properly before so I'm at a loss as to what's different this time.

Your held and infinite expertise (at least compared to mine are appreciated!

Alan

Did you ACTUALLY see the partitions being removed, recreated, and formated? Since it's a test box, I'd download suse 10 and install it.... I'm not a big Ubuntu fan although I do like Debian... If you want a debian based distro I might suggest libranet (ver 2.8.1 is free not 3.0) or Mepis... My friend installed Mepis and has upgraded his apps entrirely from Debian sources and hasn't had a single problem with it.. On the other hand, I tried the same with Ubuntu and had several disasters I had to resolve...
