Installation Freezes 75%
 

Hello, I am trying to install Ubuntu 7.04 using the alternate CD for reasons later explained in the post. The install and partition goes fine, untill the install gets to 75% and that is the part were it says it is "configuring wvdial" it has done this 5 times and i have checked the cd twice and it says it is fine. Also i am duel booting Vista which is already installed on my asus g2p laptop and have a 8gb for ubuntu and 2g for swap. I downloaded Ubuntu 7.04 and attempted to install with the GUI cd, but it gave me an error with my graphical driver, i tried the command "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" and i selected my correct driver for my graphics card, but after i hit "ok" it droped me at the command prompt. I dont know the command to restart the gui installer. Ive been looking everywere for what i can do to get Ubuntu to install but i havent found anything on this problem or how to fix it. Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advanced.

In the graphical installer try using "vesa" driver, it should work as it's pretty generic. Does not look good nor give you high resolution, but should be able to work all right trough the setup until you're ready to configure your real driver without having to fear it crashes the setup. When you boot the desktop CD, you should set (language if you like,) resolution to some low value (for example 800x600x16), then select from the menu "safe grahpics" option and before you hit ENTER, press the F-key to alter the commands/kernel line before booting; change (just in case) "splash" to "nosplash" and boot hitting ENTER. This should be a pretty safe environment when it comes to graphics, so your display controller hopefully doesn't cause trouble. It's ok to run the setup with these as you can change them to whatever you like after the setup.

If you go on with the alternate disc, choose not to install wvdial during the setup (or at least not to configure it); if it helps and you get trough the setup, you can afterwards easily install (from the disc) and configure wvdial for your needs, if you want it.

... you need to bypass modem detection at install. If you see an option to configure a modem, do not use it. Otherwise you'll have to use the hack in the link.

I'v tried using the Vesa drivers but it doesnt work with that either, and everytime i do change the driver for graphics at the install it dumps me off at the command prompt and im just getting back in to the linux swing of thigns and dont remember any commands or anything like that at all. Also how do i disable the wvdial in the install? ive never seen the option for that anywere.

It took me three attempts to install 7.04 from alternate CD. It kept freezing on various stages of installing software packages.

Alright i have tried to do little hack while the install is going but it doesn't do anything when i press Ctrl + C, and it still freezes at 75% configuring wvdial. Also i tried the GUI installer, but i still get the error and i did the reconfigure tried vesa and ATI, but it still leaves me at the command prompt screen and i don't know the command to get it back to the installer to restart it. Anyone got any other ideas on what i can do? Im almost being forced to use a different Linux which sucks cuz i haven't really played with it in a couple of years to find out what the hell i need to do lol. anyways let me know if you guys know anything

try typing startx when you are at the command-line in the gui installer

Ive tried the startx command but it says it cant be found, maybe because i haven't even installed anything yet ? What are the commands to search the cd and see the files that are runable so i can start it that way maybe ? im not sure what else i can try to do lol. Also i didnt understand the link on the previous post it says "after the first time you install it using apt ..when it hangs at the Setting up wvdial.. press CTRL+C" i dont usderstand the "apt" part and when exactly to hit CRTL+C i tried to hit it when it was stuck on Configuring wvdial that is were it always freezes every time like clock work. but it did nothing at all, shoudl i hit it when ever i see it say setting up/installing wvdial ? let me know what you think

I take it your video woes are with an ATI card... which one?

However, I'd consider this secondary to the wvdial freeze."apt" refers to the package manager... and is not relevant here. If ctrl-c is not exiting to a terminal, then the workaround wont work. Try when it gets up to that point, but before it freezes. Enter "exit" to get out of the terminal.

The only other option is to watch the install questions carefully and avoid filling out anything associated with a modem, bluetooth, or internet.

It is very likely that you will have to try another distro.
